João Ribeiro Mendes is tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Philosophy, Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH), University of Minho (UM), Braga, Portugal. He teaches graduate and postgraduate courses on Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Technology, and Science, Technology and Society. He received his B.A. in Philosophy from Portuguese Catholic University at Lisbon, his M.A. in Modern and Contemporary Philosophy from UM (with the dissertation Herbert Alexander Simon: project for an Anthroposcience), and his Ph.D. in Logic and Moral Philosophy (Philosophy of Science) from University of Santiago de Compostela (with the thesis Realism and Rationality in Science. A critique of the New Experimentalism). In 2014 he held the post-graduation Course in Top Management for Public Administration at the School of Economics and Management of UM, and the following year held the National Defence Course at the National Defence Institute of the Ministry of National Defence. He is Deputy-director of the Department of Philosophy at UM since 2014, director of the Master programme in Political Philosophy since 2016, and elected member of the IAH Council (since 2016), Scientific Council (since 2016) and Pedagogical Council (since 2017). Ribeiro Mendes has been supervising several PhD and Master students. He is research fellow and current Director of the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society at UM, after have been for almost two decades researcher of the Centre for Humanistic Studies and Coordinator of its Research Line on Philosophy and Culture between 2012 and 2016. He is author and co-author of several academic books, proceedings and journal volumes, and also has published numerous articles, critical reviews and book chapters in Portuguese and English on diverse topics. He is editor of Ethics, Politics & Society journal and was chief-editor of Diacrítica-série Filosofia e Cultura journal between 2012 and 2016. Ribeiro Mendes was the head of the Portuguese team in the Action Nr. A46/16 of the Portuguese-German Integrated Actions Program funded by CRUP-DAAD “Liquid Technoethics: Günther Anders, Hans Blumenberg and Peter Sloterdijk” (2016-2017). He is the Principal Investigator of two other ongoing research projects: (a) “Reflective Engineers – A Critical Approach to the Philosophical Thinking Tradition on Engineering Technology” (2014-2020); and (b) “SFIDA-Philosophical Innovative Solutions for the Anthropocene Challenge” (2018-2020). He was visiting professor at the Jagiellonian University of Krakow (Poland) in 2014. He is founding member and current president of the Philosophical Society of the Galicia-North of Portugal (SFEGNP) since 2014, and member of the following Scientific Societies: Portuguese Philosophical Society (since 2012); Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice (since 2012); Dutch Society for Philosophy of Science (since 2013); Political Science Association-Portugal (since 2017); Interuniversity Society of Philosophy (since 2017). He was recently elected for the the General Meeting Committee of the Association of former Auditors of the Defence National Courses. Ribeiro Mendes writes every two weeks an opinion column for the newspaper Correio do Minho. He regularly practices tennis at the Braga Tennis Club.
